What are fad diets?
Fad diets are defined as “diets intended to help a person lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time typically by reducing the amount of food consumed to minimal levels.”

Common examples:
- Ketogenic
- Detox
- Paleo
- Atkins

Characterized by:
- promises of rapid weight loss
- banning a group or groups of food
- low calorie
- short duration

Negative effects:
- Works only 5% of the time (CDC)
- Not backed by scientific research
- Promotes extremely toxic definitions of ‘healthy eating' and nutrition
- Can cause eating disorders
- Works only in the short-term; most participants gain even more weight in the long-term
